Just to get you in the spirit, check out these pictures of last year’s knit-a-thon.

Mark Your Calendars

The date for KnitFit 2012 has been set and we are ready to hook and knit the day away on February 25th, 2012 from 10:00am – 5:00pm. Donation bins for yarn, needles, hooks and completed projects for donation have been circulated throughout the Cape Breton Regional Library Branches. If you have unused yarn, extra notions, or warm winter woolies lying around the house to donate, please drop them off at your local library branch.

This year, all knit items will be donated to the Salvation Army, Clothe-A-Family. The Cape Breton Regional Library is pleased to report that just before Christmas, 120 knit and crochet items were delivered to Loaves and Fishes and all of the items have been distributed!

As with previous years, pledges collected will be in support of children’s literacy programs at the library. Click Here to download a pledge form.

Knit Fit 2011

It’s that time of year again! Taking place Saturday, February 26 from 10am – 5pm at two locations – the Cape Breton Regional Library in Sydney and at the Baddeck Library in Baddeck.

This year’s finished items will be donated to the Every Woman’s Centre in Sydney and the Nova Scotia Department of Community Services in Victoria County. As always, pledges raised for knit-a-thon participation will be donated to CBRL Children’s Literacy Programs at the Cape Breton Regional Library.

Donation boxes for knitting needles, crochet hooks and yarn are now at each of the Cape Breton Regional Libraries. If you have extra yarn you want to donate or even if you have completed knit items and can’t make it to the actual knit-a-thon, please feel free to drop off these items at your local library branch.

Find a local knitter to sponsor; make a donation at a library branch of pledge money, knit goods, or yarn/needles/crochet hooks; or come prepared to knit and crochet the day away.

Never knit before? No problem! There are tons of experienced knitters to teach you, lots of needles and yarn and hours to get it right. Scroll through some older posts below to find a very basic hat and scarf pattern for your use. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your local library branch.

Pledge forms can be downloaded online at www.cbrl.ca or by clicking on the following link: Pledge Form 2011.

To help get you in the mood: here are some pictures of last year’s Knit Fit Knit-a-thon!

DesBarres is Dressed

Janet, Chris, Carver and I had a great time decorating DesBarres in downtown Sydney this week. He is all dressed with knitting needles in hand (literally) and ready for Saturday! If you haven’t already, you can pick up your pledge sheet at your local library branch or download it here. Knitting needles, crochet hooks, yarn and completed projects can still be dropped off at your local library branch.  We are gearing up for Saturday and another day filled with crafting, snacking and fun.  If you don’t knit, swing by the McConnell or Baddeck libraries and support a knitter or check out the completed projects.

See you Saturday!

Knit Fit 2010

Preparations for the third annual Knit Fit Knit-a-thon are underway! This year’s event will be held on February 20th, 2010, from 10 am to 5 pm (with a storm date of February 27th) at the McConnell Library in Sydney, and at the Baddeck Library in Baddeck.  Knitters and crochet afficianados of all stripes, new or experienced, are invited to participate.  Come for all or part of the day, start a project or bring one to finish.  All library branches are also accepting donations of yarn, needles, finished items, or funds towards the Knit-a-thon.   So print a Pledge Form, pick up the knitting needles and crochet hooks, and get ready for another great day!

Donated knitted or crocheted items and products of the knit-a-thon in Sydney will be given to Every Women’s Centre, a charity that provides free clothes to families in need in Cape Breton County.  Goods donated and created in Baddeck will be donated to the Victoria County branches of the NS Dept of Community Services where they will be made available to clients in need.

Participants are asked to have friends and family sponsor them, with all pledges going to support Children’s Literacy programs at Cape Breton Regional Library branches throughout the region.  These include the Summer Reading Program, Storytime programs for different age groups, and teen programs.

Just Days To Go…

We are mere days away from this year’s knitathon! In honour of our countdown, we outfitted a special guest of honour in downtown Sydney.

It’s Knit Fit time again!

This year’s Knit Fit Knit-a-Thon is fast approaching. The date is set for February 21st at the Cape Breton Regional Library in Sydney and will also be happening at the same time at the Baddeck branch. It is time again to dig through the stash of yarn, needles, finished projects without homes, almost finished projects without home and other knitting accessories and donate to the Knit Fit Knit-a-Thon once again! Donations can be left at your local branch of the Cape Breton Regional Library. For more information contact your local library branch or visit their website.  You can also download a copy of our pledge form or pick one up at your local library branch.  Last year we had a greatly successful event and we can’t wait to do it all again this year. Check back in the next couple of days for pledge sheet information and the time of the event. In the meantime, here are some more photos from last year’s event.

The Needles were clicking…

Our first Knit Fit Community knit-a-thon was a great success! In the end, we had over 450 balls of yarn donated, 220 completed knit projects (and counting, they keep rolling in!) and over 1100 dollars raised for children’s literacy programs at the Cape Breton Regional Libraries.

Despite some snowy weather, we were 24 knitters and crocheters strong and had a wonderful day together making new friends, gabbing, enjoying lunch and winning some fabulous prizes.

A big THANK-YOU! to all of our community sponsors that helped to make the day happen. Our lunch was donated by: The Superstore in Sydney River, Atlantic Super Valu on Welton Street, Sobeys -Prince Street, Sobeys- Sydney River and Joe’s Warehouse provided our much talked about yarn cake.

We had door prizes a plenty – 20 in total. These were donated by the following: Baadeck Yarns- Baddeck, Moraffs- Whitney Pier, Cambridge Suites- Sydney, The Loop Craft Cafe – Halifax, Gaspereau Valley Fibres – Wolfville, Bras D’Ors Lakes Fibre Studio- Georges River, and the Cape Breton Regional Library.

And of course, the day would not have been a success without the generous donations of time and hand-made outerwear. A HUGE thank-you to all those who showed up to knit or brought donations to their local libraries. Your generosity was greatly appreciated.

More Donations, More Giveaways!

Moraff’s StorefrontOver the weekend, we received an abundance of donations from Moraff’s and Baadeck Yarns. Moraff’s gave us a loot bag filled with colourful yarns (perfect for mittens, toques and scarves) and Baadeck Yarns surprised us all with their oh-so-desirable donations that filled our trunk, literally. Once again, thank you both for your generosity and donations!
